 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena, kinta'nija, ; April 16, 1971 from April 16, 1971 until March 31,), known mononymously as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Her name is the "Queen of Tejano music" her contribution to fashion and music led her to be one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in the year 2020, in their "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", which was based on Latin music as well as Latin albums. Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her style of clothing. Her fashion choices have earned her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" from media outlets. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was frequently criticized and was refused bookings in venues across Texas because she performed Tejano music--a male-dominated music genre. Her fame grew when she won the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the Year in 1987. It was awarded nine times. In 1989, she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album entitled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo reached the top spot in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight months in a row. The album's success in the commercial market was praised by music critics as making it the "breakthrough" record of her musical career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a smash and became her signature tune. Live! (1993) won Best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to receive this honor. In 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most successful Latin albums in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being the reason behind Tejano music's first commercially viable era as it became one of the most loved Latin music subgenres at the time.
